About This Spot

Stepping into Hi-Ho #1 Barbecue feels like slipping into a familiar rhythm of a small town staple where decades of stories and flavors come together without fuss or pretense. This is a place where the pace slows just enough to savor hearty bites and simple moments, where the hum of friendly chatter blends with the sizzle from the kitchen.

The atmosphere is unhurried and welcoming, fitting perfectly with its Hammond setting — a relaxed local eatery where the main attraction is good, honest food served with a side of warmth. It’s the kind of spot where you can roll up with a hungry appetite and leave satisfied without rushing through your meal or the company at your table.

Here, the menu is less about trends and more about comforting essentials done with pride. Plates arrive piled with generous helpings of pork and beef sandwiches dripping with house sauce, beckoning you to embrace the messy joy of each bite. Whether you're stopping in for a quick lunch or settling in for a casual dinner, the food has that down-to-earth quality — straightforward, flavorful, and priced just right. Alongside the main courses, there’s a comforting lineup of sides and snacks that keep things easy and cheerful, from crispy fries to simply dressed grilled cheese.

Hi-Ho #1 Barbecue doesn’t look to dazzle with ambiance or polished presentation, but its charm comes through in the genuine, no-frills experience — the grease-stained napkins, the cold bottled drinks, and the always-ready paper towels speak of a place that knows its strength lies in the hearty, unfiltered pleasure of slow-savored meals and community connection.

Whether you’re craving a late-night bite, a satisfying breakfast, or a reliable pit stop after a day on the road, Hi-Ho #1 Barbecue offers a quietly comforting ritual — a reminder that some local treasures are found in the laughter, the sauce-slicked smiles, and the simple joy of sharing a meal that feels like home.

More like a small town Arby’s with 90 years of history. Not a smoke pit BBQ dive. Laid back dinner. Beef is roast beef, not brisket. No ribs or other BBQ joint staples.

Excellent place to eat. When we first walked in the staff was very friendly. We were in town for a travel ball game. The hamburgers were excellent. The drinks were bottled and cold. The fries were hot and fresh. The place was clean. I recommend it to anyone. The barbecue beef sandwhich had way too much sauce which made the bread soggy. Bit overall, I give it a 5.

Unbelievably good pork and beef sandwiches. Messy as heck but delicious and they provide plenty of paper towels at the tables. Don’t expect any fine dining accoutrements or atmosphere here just good food. If you’re hungry this is the place to go. Free advice would be to not wear anything you are afraid to leave with a grease or sauce stain.

Driving in Hammond and saw this place and looked very inviting. Made a U turn and stopped in. Lots of variety on the menu. I got a beef and a pork sandwich. Both were flavorful and super sloppy with lots of sauce. I heard the burgers were even better. Going to try one next time. I’ll definitely go back! Worth a stop, oh and very reasonable prices!!
